Our Choice, By Al Gore

We are on the cusp of addressing climate change, and it is about time with the droughts, wildfires, heat waves, enormous snow and rain storms (including hurricanes) and record floods.  So recently I reviewed a book from my shelf by Al Gore.

DSC08455  If we open out the flap on the front  cover, we see the earth as it was in 2009,    with green earth and a lot of polar ice.

DSC08467 This is the title page.

DSC08468 Here is the table of contents.  This book has main sections on:

  • The Crisis
  • Our Sources of Energy
  • Living Systems
  • How We Use Energy
  • The Obstacles We Need to Overcome
  • Going Far Quickly

It is an attractive book with many illustrative color pictures.

DSC08463  This graph shows that California moderated its per capita energy consumption starting as early as 1976.  California got an early start on the rest of us in addressing climate change, and California demonstrates that public policy is effective in reducing energy consumption, and thus in helping to address climate change.

DSC08456 If we open up the flap and turn the page, we see a desertified North America, no polar ice over the water, and diminished polar ice over the land, and more tropical storms.  We cannot see the temperature change.  This book is a treasure trove of information and help at our fingertips.

The Sea Level Is Already Rising Due To Climate Change

National Geographic published this article, Sea Level Rise: Ocean Levels Are Getting Higher-Can We Do Anything About It?

National Geographic article-sea-level-rise_16648_600x450 svd 31AUG2015  This photograph from the article,  shows Venice, Italy, during a big flood in 2008.

According to this article, the sea level has already risen in the past century 4 to 8 inches, and the rate of rise is expected to increase substantially, due to climate change.  Since the early 1990s it has risen an average of 0.14 inches per year, ( which is about 1/6 of an inch per year).  This suggest that it has risen perhaps 4 inches in the 25 years, and maybe the rate of increase has already picked up.

What are the implications for us who live on Galveston Island, an average of 7 feet above sea level?   Eventual inundation.  Of course, it is a gradual process, marked by higher tides here and there, according to the sun, moon, and storms.  In the meantime, we can enjoy our beach, homes, and city, as the people do in flooded Venice, above.

In answer to the question, can we do anything about it?  Of course we can.  We can use our resources, including all energy and brain resources to transitions off of fossil fuels.  We should already have been transitioning away from them.

Fareed Zacharia’s Open Letter to Senator Schumer

Iran_(orthographic_projection).svg This map of Iran shows the global position of Iran, (attribution below).

Fareed Zacharia’s letter tells why he is not convinced by Chuck Schumer’s (Senator, NY) position against the Iran Deal.  Fareed Zacharia “respectfully urges” Senator  Schumer, “to reconsider” his recent “decision to vote against the nuclear agreement with Iran”.  Fareed Zacharia’s letter is very thoughtful, and very concise.  Please follow its link!
