By Sprout.
Once upon a time Cat lived with Sprout, a young child. Dog lived there too.
But Bird lived outside.
Cat had a dish of cat food just outside of Sprout’s window.
Sometimes Sprout watched Cat eat the cat food from the dish.
Sometimes Sprout saw Dog eat it.
Sometimes, however, Sprout saw Bird eat it.
In fact, sometimes Sprout saw Bird’s brothers and sisters eat it.
Sprout knew that Bird ate worms.
So Sprout especially wondered why Bird ate Cat’s food.
Maybe Bird thought that cat’s food looked like worms.
“Maybe Bird saw the Cat’s food and thought it was worms.”
“Maybe Cat’s food tasted like worms.”
Bird heard Sprout talking, and Bird said, ” Sometimes I eat worms.
“Sometimes I eat caterpillars.
“Sometimes I eat bugs like June bugs.
“Sometimes I eat flies.
“Sometimes I eat berries.
“Sometimes I eat grapes.
“Sometimes I eat figs.
“And sometimes I even eat Cat’s food!
“Besides,” said Bird, “Cat’s food is there more often than all the other things I eat.
“Worms only come out when it rains. It did not rain today. So no worms came out today. That is why I could not find any”, said Bird.
“I didn’t know that”, said Sprout.”
